UHaul for My Son

Poor sad Lordesburg.  Three exits, Motel Avenue West, Main Street, Motel Avenue West.  Want good Mexican? Ramona’s, Three miles down to your right.  Past Business after business, closed, empty, or maybe a hand painted sign, “Superior Motel, $24.95”.  Tired from the drive, still high from excellent green chili rellenos, lips burning, we sit on the curb watching silent thunder storms chase each other between  freight cars and long hall trucks, and smell the diesel.  Poor sad Lordsburg.

Sonoro, TX. Arriving at 85 MPH under O’Keefe skies, with cross winds, road work and new black macadam.  Hit my shin a fourth time on the ever to be cursed trailer hitch, a truly superb steak dinner at Sutton County Steak House with excellent grilled vegetables, and a charming and charmed waitress who learned how to pronounce “Worchestershire”.  Breakfast at Suttons again with really good coffee and a chef who knows how to cook bacon.  We look to Austin and a blissfully short drive.

Austin at last. A short drive past miles of tire shreds and antlered road kill. Finally the buildings ahead and rain. The new home was easy to find, up three flights. 19, 9, and 10 steps, Over and Over and Over.  Finally the couch, rotated twice in each of three dimensions to get it through the entranceway.  Furrs for reminisce and Threadgills for excellence.

Austin International Airport.  Just about to leave my son hundreds of miles and an entire world away.  I am overwhelmed.  I feel torn apart and can only say, “I will miss you.”  There are no words.
